Boston doubles for New York City in the upcoming biographical drama

“The Collaboration,” a movie about the complicated friendship between Andy Warhol (Paul Bettany, “Avengers”) and fellow artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeremy Pope, “The Inspection”) filmed on the sound stages at Marina Studios in Quincy last fall.  The film wrapped Oct. 28 after also shooting in Canton, Lynn, Medford and Boston. A release date is to be announced, though Bettany has reportedly said the film will hit theaters in late summer and possibly premier at the Venice Film Festival.

Four-time Oscar-nominee Anthony McCarten (“The Darkest Hour,” “The Two Popes,” wrote the script, adapted from his hit play of the same name. McCarten is no stranger to Boston audiences. He wrote the screenplay for the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” which was filmed locally. His smash musical, “A Beautiful Noise,” about the life and songs of music legend Neil Diamond had its pre-Broadway tryout at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theater.

“The Collaboration” also features Bettany’s Marvel co-star Daniel Brühl (“Captain America: Civil War” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) as Bruno Bischofberger, the Swiss art dealer who first suggested a series of collaborations between Basquiat and Warhol.  Melissa Barrera, the breakout star from the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical “In the Heights” plays Basquait’s girlfriend.
