Massachusetts’ favorite funnyman, Steve Carell, is gearing up for another round of villainous hilarity in “Despicable Me 4,” which will hit theaters on July 3.
Beyond his involvement in that popular animated franchise, Carell is set to have a milestone year in 2024. He will make his Broadway debut this spring, starring as the title character in Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya” at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre. Previews begin April 2 and the play opens April 24.
Carell, who is married to Cohasset native Nancy Walls and is a father of two, continues to be a beloved figure in the community. Although originally from Acton, Carell spends summers with his family at their home in Cohasset, and in 2009, he bought the historic Marshfield Hills General Store. Carell became a darling around the South Shore when he gave the “MarshVegas” shout-out from the Emmy Awards Red Carpet in 2007. Nancy Carell is a “Saturday Night Live” alum and also had parts in the hit comedy “Bridesmaids” and “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,” opposite her husband. They created the cop comedy “Angie Tribeca,” which ran for four seasons on TBS.

Recently, Steve Carell was part of Wes Anderson’s star-studded ensemble in “Asteroid City,” portraying an eccentric motel manager, and the actor earned a SAG nomination for the role of a psychotherapist held captive by a serial killer (Domhnall Gleeson) in “The Patient,” a limited series on FX and Hulu.
The first “Despicable Me” film debuted in 2010 when Carell was a household name for playing cringe-inducing boss Michael Scott on “The Office,” which ended in 2013. Fourteen years and four films later, Gru and Carell continue their comedic journey. The latest installment finds the reformed supervillain navigating challenges on the homefront, contending with his mischievous son Gru Jr., and facing a new nemesis, Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell), and his seductive accomplice Valentina (Sofia Vergara).
Key cast members returning to the mix are Kristen Wiig (Lucy) and Pierre Coffin (the voice of the Minions), along with Miranda Cosgrove (Margo), Dana Gaier (Edith), and Madison Polan (Agnes.) Joey King, Stephen Colbert, and Chloe Fineman also lend their voices to this new adventure. Chris Renaud directs from a script penned by Mike White (the mastermind from the Emmy-winning “The White Lotus”) and Ken Daurio, the veteran writer of every “Despicable Me.”
Carell also reunites with his former mate from “The Office,” John Krasinski, for the upcoming comedy-drama, “IF.” Written and directed by Krasinski, the film, scheduled for release on May 17, explores a little girl’s journey through a tough time as she witnesses everyone’s imaginary friends come to life—Carell lends his distinct voice to one of these whimsical characters.
