Amy Adams continues her Massachusetts film streak with ‘At the Sea,’ following ‘The Fighter’ and ‘American Hustle.’

7/13/24 Update: Filming heated up this past week with cameras rolling in Plympton, Halifax, and Marshfield at Brant Rock Beach and The Jetty restaurant. (Fun fact: The quaint village of Brant Rock is where the grand finale shootout unfolds in Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 2.” Scenes for “The Finest Hours” were also shot along the Brant Rock Esplanade.)

Amy Adams will be hoping good things come in threes. The actress, a six-time Academy Award nominee, has left her mark on Boston twice before with a pair of unforgettable performances in “The Fighter” and “American Hustle,” both of which earned her Oscar nominations. Now, in July, she’s set to take the lead once again in her third made-in-Mass film, the drama “At the Sea.”
Adams stars as Laura, fresh from rehab and seeking solace at her family’s seaside retreat. She faces the challenge of rediscovering herself without the identity of her former career. Kornel Mundruczó (“Pieces of a Woman”) will direct from a script written by his wife, Kata Wéber.
Shooting is scheduled to begin July 1 out of Marina Studios in Quincy. While details regarding the specific coastal community serving as the film’s backdrop remain undisclosed, Adams is already familiar with the Massachusetts landscape. She lit up the screen in 2013’s star-studded (Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence) con-artist drama “American Hustle,” which filmed scenes across various locations including Worcester, Boston, Medford, Canton, and Brockton. Additionally, she delivered a memorable performance as a Lowell barmaid, taking on Mark Wahlberg’s loud-mouthed, hair-pulling sisters in “The Fighter,” nabbing a supporting actress Oscar nomination and an MTV Movie Award nod for Best Fight. David O’Russell directed both films.
Adams also earned some Boston bona fides, playing a charming real estate stager from the city in the 2010 romantic comedy “Leap Year.” The film is about a woman who travels to Ireland to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on Feb. 29, Leap Day, when tradition says women can propose to men. She next stars in “Nightbitch,” a dark story of motherhood and rage. It releases on Dec. 6, from writer-director Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”).
Boston theater veteran and educator Naheem Garcia, known for his roles in locally shot films and TV shows such as “Challengers” and “Free Guy,” is also part of the “At the Sea” cast. Additionally, Milton native Jenny Slate, famous for “Venom” and “Obvious Child,” will co-star. Emmy-winners Murray Bartlett from “The White Lotus” and Brett Goldstein, who played Roy Kent, the foul-mouthed footballer with a heart of gold in “Ted Lasso,” have also signed on. Rounding out the ensemble are Daniel Levy of “Schitt’s Creek,” Rainn Wilson from “The Office,” and Chloe East of “The Fabelmans.”
