The mean streets of Boston will provide the setting for an upcoming crime drama involving a dirty cop and an organized crime ring. Yeah, that sounds like many other Boston flicks, but Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh takes the lead in “The Mother,” putting a female spin on the familiar narrative.

Yeoh plays Ann, the matriarch of an immigrant family. When her two teenage sons become entangled in the dangerous web spun by a corrupt police officer and local thugs, Ann’s fierce determination to protect her family drives her to the edge. She’ll stop at nothing to keep her boys safe. With Yeoh in the role and given her action film bona fides, Ann promises to be the type of street-smart badass who’ll crack as many skulls as Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) did in “The Departed.” Boston is home to formidable women, too.

Steering the ship is French actor-director Melanie Laurent (“Wingwomen”), directing from a script written by P.G. Cuschieri. The movie is reportedly being filmed in Los Angeles, and shooting is expected to start in June.

Yeoh, a Malaysian-born actress, has showcased her versatility in a range of roles. From her breakthrough in martial arts thrillers to her international recognition as a tough Bond girl in “Tomorrow Never Dies” and a sword-slinging warrior in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” Yeoh has consistently delivered. She earned critical praise for her performances in films like “Crazy Rich Asians,” playing an overprotective mother, but she hit the motherlode with “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” earning a best actress Academy Award for her multi-faceted role as a mom struggling to connect with her rebellious daughter.

Yeoh will also be seen on the big screen in November, playing Madame Morrible, the press secretary to the Wizard in “Wicked,” the film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical based on the book by Gregory Maguire, a Concord resident.

Two other Boston crime dramas are expected to be released in the coming year. Liam Neeson’s “Thug” is due out on October 24. No date has been announced yet for Matt Damon and Casey Affleck’s robbery-gone-wrong yarn “The Instigators,” which will land on Apple TV+.
