Sudbury star Chris Evans (aka Captain America) isn’t just saving the day; he’s saving Christmas in the upcoming holiday action film, “Red One.”
Shockwaves are sent through the holiday season when a villain kidnaps Santa from the North Pole. But legendary tracker Jack O’Malley (Evans) and an E.L.F (Extremely Large and Formidable) operative named Callum Drift (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) won’t let the holidays go down without a fight. They team up to rescue Santa and restore cheer to the world.
“Chris and I have been waiting to make a Christmas movie our entire careers, and now, finally, the trouble begins,” Johnson posted on his Instagram account when filming began in November 2022.

A talented ensemble brings “Red One” to life, with a jacked-up J.K. Simmons (an Oscar-winner for “Whiplash”) as super-hero Santa Claus (aka Nick) and the lovable Mrs. Claus played by Bonnie Hunt. Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, Kristofer Hivju, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Nick Kroll, and Wesley Kimmel are joining them.
“Our movie is a big, fun, action-packed and fresh new take on Christmas lore,” Johnson posted on Instagram. Think ‘Jumanji’ meets ‘Miracle on 34th St.’ meets ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ with a dash of Harry Potter and sprinkled on top with my all-time favorite Christmas movie, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’

Evans is best known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury High School in 1999, where he was a classmate of “Succession” actor Jeremy Strong. They shared the stage in a school production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Evans recently starred in “Knives Out,” “Ghosted,” “The Gray Man,” and “Pain Hustlers.”
“Red One” is written by “Hobbs & Shaw” screenwriter Chris Morgan and directed by Jake Kasdan, who previously directed Johnson in two of the “Jumanji” movies.
“Red One” blasts into cinemas on Nov. 15 ahead of a streaming release on Prime Video.
